Writing is thinking

We seem to have forgotten an important fact: good writing IS critical thinking.

The current craze for critical thinking treats it like a mystic art—some usual series of mind connections that we must develop by cute or clever exercises. But back in the day, students developed critical thinking by writing essays, lots of essays. The essay has it all as a teaching tool—problem solving from point zero (that is, the blank document)., linearity, structure, relations of ideas.

Preeminent among essay types for developing critical thinking is the philosophy essay. This essay type requires a student to give logical arguments for the points made. Logic, of course, is a big part of critical thought.

Do you want to write (and think) more critically? Do you want this for your child? Do you want this for your employees? If so, please reach out to Verbiculture.

If you are an educator, check back in Spring 2016, for Verbiculture's new critical thinking curriculum tools.
